Interesting story; interesting enough that I bought vol. 2. The author knows the time period fairly well (I detected several small errors, but that's just me). His characters are well developed and act in realistic fashions. As usual, with Roman period novels, the names are a little hard to keep track of. Overall, I did enjoy this book.

enjoyable and an easy read. not in my top10 tho'.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I am only sorry I didn't start this before the many other soldier of Rome books. I could see little that I didn't like and found it compelling reading. The only slight dislike was how all the initiative came from one person when more innovation could have been included from more senior soldiers at various times. An interesting book.
annoyingly written in present tense. No particular reason ever given as to why his older brother would even like him since they apparently hardly know each other.
Well written and covers a period of Roman history not normally covered by writers. Most books seem to cover Roman history from The time just before Ceasar and onward from their. This book takes the reader back to the early days of the Empire and provides a picture of the inner workings of the political and military situations at that time. Marcus Furius is someone I knew little of, and now I look forward to hi amd his adventures in future writings by this author. Well done and as good as the "Marching with Ceasar" series of books by R.W. Peake.
The editing is poor but for me it was still a good story. It deals with the very early days of the republic, a period that has not been dealt with very much. It is informative and it was especially interesting to learn how the phalanx could be defeated. The story moves quickly and I never lost interest.
The punctuation and diction are sufficiently atrocious to ruin a good story. If it's worth publishing, it's worth editing. I expect more from .
The development of the Roman Legion, its manner of fighting and use of weaponry is well documented in this book. Camillus is an interesting character who we will probably see in Mulhem's future endeavors.

I found the story-line interesting and I believe it would appeal even to those who could care less about war and conquest.
